HW 7

1)
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail.
Most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television are reshaped or redefined by the Internet, giving birth to new services such as Voice over Internet Protocol and IPTV. Newspaper, book and other print publishing are adapting to Web site technology, or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds. The Internet has enabled or accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire industries.
The origins of the Internet reach back to research of the 1960s, commissioned by the United States government in collaboration with private commercial interests to build robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks. The funding of a new U.S. backbone by the National Science Foundation in the 1980s, as well as private funding for other commercial backbones, led to worldwide participation in the development of new networking technologies, and the merger of many networks. The commercialization of what was by the 1990s an international network resulted in its popularization and incorporation into virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2011, more than 2.1 billion people – nearly a third of Earth's population – use the services of the Internet.
The Internet has no centralized governance in either technological implementation or policies for access and usage; each constituent network sets its own standards. Only the overreaching definitions of the two principal name spaces in the Internet, the Internet Protocol address space and the Domain Name System, are directed by a maintainer organization, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers The technical underpinning and standardization of the core protocols is an activity of the Internet Engineering Task Force a non-profit organization of loosely affiliated international participants that anyone may associate with by contributing technical expertise.
Internet is one of the most important things in our lifes. An average person is online 13 hours a day. Internet helps you do everything while you are laying on your bed. On Internet everything is one click away. In the last 50 years technology has undergone an amazing transformation. But with the emergence of the Internet, is our ability to access technology on a daily basis a good thing or a bad thing?
Internet addiction disorder (IAD), or, more broadly, Internet overuse, problematic computer use or pathological computer use, is excessive computer use that interferes with daily life. These terms avoid the distracting and divisive term addiction and are not limited to any single cause.
IAD was originally proposed as a disorder in a satirical hoax by Ivan Goldberg, M.D., in 1995. He took pathological gambling as diagnosed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as his model for the descriptionof IAD. It is not, however, included in the current DSM as of 2009. IAD receives coverage in the press, and possible future classification as a psychological disorder continues to be debated and researched.
Online activities which, if done in person, would normally be considered troublesome, such as compulsive gambling or shopping, are sometimes called net compulsions.Others, such as reading or playing computer games, are troubling only to the extent that these activities interfere with normal life. Supporters of disorder classification often divide IAD into subtypes by activity, such as excessive, overwhelming, or inappropriate pornography use, gaming, online social networking, blogging, emailor Internet shopping Opponents note that compulsive behaviors may not themselves be addictive.

Internet has effected our lives in many ways. Now, we can read newspapers online, shop online without trying out any of the clothes we buy. In my opinion it sounds wrong to shop clothes online. Every company makes their sizes different. When I am shopping I would like try on the stuff I am buying. I understand buying books, magazines, electronics online. They are cheaper online. You don’t need to drive miles from store to store to find the book you need for the cheapest price. The internet saves us a lot of money but at the same time it makes people lazy.
If an Average person is online 13 hours a day. It only leaves them 11 hours to do other stuff. Researchs say people should sleep at least 8 hours to rest well. So this leaves only 3 hours per person everyday to do something instead of being online or sleeping. Another research says that in 1970 the obesity was %14. In 2010 its %38 percent. So these researchs can tell how unhealthy and unsocial people are becoming.
People thinks having a lot of friends on facebook means they are social, No its not. How many of them do you really know? How many of them have you ever talked to? Do you ever hang out with a friend you found on facebook? People used to hang out everyday in 1980s and had so many real good friends. In nowadays people have a lot of good friends but a little real friends and only hang out on the weekends.
With Social Networks like Facebook, Myspace have being violating personal privacy for years. If you don’t change your setting anyone can find you on the Social Networks and use your name, address, birthday and even your pictures. A new feature on Facebook Iphone app is that you can go to people you don’t knows profiles and save their pictures to your Iphone.
The internet offers many opportunities for laziness. One common opportunity that often comes to my mind is online shopping. Shopping via the internet gives consumers with the opportunity to shop for whatever they want, without any distractions such as other customers or annoying salespeople. I know many people that shop online on a regular basis, including friends, teachers, and classmates.
Dr Susan Blackmore, lecturer in psychology at the University of West England in Bristol, claimed on Thursday that e-learning is making children mentally lazy by encouraging them to rely on the click of a button for information. She told the audience of academics attending the debate at the Royal Institute that the expanse of information available on the Internet is preventing school children from memorising and storing knowledge in their brain. "Traditionally, what has primarily been an issue for education has been putting knowledge into kid's heads. But now it will be about showing them how to navigate in that world," said Dr Blackmore. Her argument is in direct contrast with the government's push to have all have all schools connected to the Internet by 2002. Department of education and Skills require 1 computer for every 11 students in primary schools, and one for every seven secondary school students.
Each person’s Internet use is different. You might need to use the Internet extensively for your work, for example, or you might rely heavily on social networking sites to keep in touch with faraway family and friends. Spending a lot of time online only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your relationships, your work, school, or other important things in your life. If you keep repeating compulsive Internet behavior despite the negative consequences in your offline life, then it’s time to strike a new balance.
Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. When you have a bad day and are looking for a way to escape your problems or to quickly relieve stress or self-soothe, the Internet can be an easily accessible outlet. Losing yourself online can temporarily make feelings such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air. As much comfort as the Internet can provide, though, it’s important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises.
For many people, an important aspect of overcoming Internet and computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings. Even when your Internet use is back to healthy levels, the painful and unpleasant feelings that may have prompted you to engage in unhealthy Internet use in the past will remain. So, it’s worth spending some time thinking about the different ways you intend to deal with stressful situations and the daily irritations that would normally have you logging on
While gambling has been a well-documented problem for years, the availability of Internet gambling has made gambling far more accessible. It has also made it harder for recovering addicts to avoid relapse. Online or virtual casinos are open all day, every day for anyone with Internet access. People who don’t live within close proximity of a traditional casino or betting track, for example, or even those who are too young to gain access, now find it much easier to gamble online.
Net compulsions such as compulsive stock trading or online auction shopping can be just as financially and socially damaging as online gambling. eBay addicts, for example, may wake up at strange hours in order to be online for the last remaining minutes of an online auction. They may purchase things they don’t need and can’t afford in order to experience the excitement of placing the winning bid.
Compulsive online gamers can isolate themselves for many hours at a time participating in virtual reality or online fantasy games, neglecting other aspects of their lives such as work and family.
When used responsibly, the Internet can be a great place to interact socially, meet new people, and even start romantic relationships. However, online relationships can often be more intense than those in real life. Our fantasies are given free reign and the idea of being with our online love can exceed all realistic expectations. Since few real-life relationships can compete with these wild, fantasy relationships, the Internet addict will prefer to spend more and more time with their online friends.
Another problem is that about 50% of people online lie about their age, weight, job, marital status, or gender. When online friends meet and the real-life person fails to match the online persona, it can create profound emotional disappointment.
Identity theft has been a problem for decades, but as the Internet becomes more and more commonplace, Internet identity theft has become a problem of pandemic proportions.
According to the FTC, 1 in 8 Americans in the last 5 years has been affected by Internet identity theft. Internet identity theft is different from common identity theft in a few ways. Common identity theft takes place after something is physically stolen from you like a wallet containing credit cards and a driver’s license or an un-shredded credit card statement from your garbage bin. The thief would take these stolen articles and use them to make a fraudulent purchase or something of that nature. Internet identity theft can be much worse.
Internet identity theft can be much more devastating than conventional identity theft because most victims of Internet identity theft are completely unaware that anything has been stolen from them until it is much too late.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center, in 2009 released its latest annual report on victims' complaints received and referred to law enforcement.
From January 1, 2008 – December 31, 2008, the IC3 website received 275,284 complaint submissions. This is a (33.1%) increase when compared to 2007 when 206,884 complaints were received. These filings were composed of complaints primarily related to fraudulent and non-fraudulent issues on the Internet.
These complaints were composed of many different fraud types such as auction fraud, non-delivery, and credit/debit card fraud as well as non-fraudulent complaints such as computer intrusions, spam/unsolicited e-mail, and child pornography. All of these complaints are accessible to federal, state, and local law enforcement to support active investigations, trend analysis, and public outreach and awareness efforts.
From the submissions, IC3 referred 72,940 complaints of crime to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies around the country for further consideration. The vast majority of cases were fraudulent in nature and involved a financial loss on the part of the complainant. The total dollar loss from all referred cases of fraud was $264.6 million with a median dollar loss of $931.00 per complaint. This is up from $239.1 million in total reported losses in 2007.

File sharing is an example of transferring large amounts of data across the Internet. A computer file can be emailed to customers, colleagues and friends as an attachment. It can be uploaded to a website or FTP server for easy download by others. It can be put into a "shared location" or onto a file server for instant use by colleagues. The load of bulk downloads to many users can be eased by the use of "mirror" servers or peer-to-peer networks. In any of these cases, access to the file may be controlled by user authentication, the transit of the file over the Internet may be obscured by encryption, and money may change hands for access to the file. The price can be paid by the remote charging of funds from, for example, a credit card whose details are also passed—usually fully encrypted—across the Internet. The origin and authenticity of the file received may be checked by digital signatures or by MD5 or other message digests. These simple features of the Internet, over a worldwide basis, are changing the production, sale, and distribution of anything that can be reduced to a computer file for transmission. This includes all manner of print publications, software products, news, music, film, video, photography, graphics and the other arts. This in turn has caused seismic shifts in each of the existing industries that previously controlled the production and distribution of these products.
Streaming media is the real-time delivery of digital media for the immediate consumption or enjoyment by end users. Many radio and television broadcasters provide Internet feeds of their live audio and video productions. They may also allow time-shift viewing or listening such as Preview, Classic Clips and Listen Again features. These providers have been joined by a range of pure Internet "broadcasters" who never had on-air licenses. This means that an Internet-connected device, such as a computer or something more specific, can be used to access on-line media in much the same way as was previously possible only with a television or radio receiver. The range of available types of content is much wider, from specialized technical webcasts to on-demand popular multimedia services. Podcasting is a variation on this theme, where—usually audio—material is downloaded and played back on a computer or shifted to a portable media player to be listened to on the move. These techniques using simple equipment allow anybody, with little censorship or licensing control, to broadcast audio-visual material worldwide.
Digital media streaming increases the demand for network bandwidth. For example, standard image quality needs 1 Mbit/s link speed for SD 480p, HD 720p quality requires 2.5 Mbit/s, and the top-of-the-line HDX quality needs 4.5 Mbit/s for 1080p.
Webcams are a low-cost extension of this phenomenon. While some webcams can give full-frame-rate video, the picture is usually either small or updates slowly. Internet users can watch animals around an African waterhole, ships in the Panama Canal, traffic at a local roundabout or monitor their own premises, live and in real time. Video chat rooms and video conferencing are also popular with many uses being found for personal webcams, with and without two-way sound. YouTube was founded on 15 February 2005 and is now the leading website for free streaming video with a vast number of users. It uses a flash-based web player to stream and show video files. Registered users may upload an unlimited amount of video and build their own personal profile. YouTube claims that its users watch hundreds of millions, and upload hundreds of thousands of videos daily.

Some other advantages of Internet is that you can get help with your homework. Learn new things, Watch videos of your interest, Listen to music. So internet has both advantages and disadvantages. I wrote all this but I don’t know what I would do without Internet.

2)-America financed Britain and France in WWI. The money it lent was largely used to buy supplies from the US. Same thing in WWII. Lending money was a good business decision. After the wars were over, the US wanted its pound of flesh too. Trouble was, the debtors didn’t have a pound left
-Now, Most of the European countries have a lot of debt and China has more than $3 trillion in savings.
-It is the rising star like the US in the early 20th century, it is the nation to which the tired, old countries of the developed world look to finance their mistakes.
- China said they will not loan any money to the other countries.

2) -The German government is putting pressure on Facebook over its facial recognition application and related privacy concerns.
-The U.S.-based social media company was given a deadline of November 7 to ensure that its facial recognition software meets the standards set by German and European Union privacy laws.
-The software lets users come up with identities of individuals via photos found online.Germany alleges Facebook collected the data “without the explicit consent of Facebook users".
-In recent months, facial recognition applications led to concerns after several Carnegie Mellon researchers were able to ID one-third of the subjects they tested, using a photo and facial-recognition technology from Google.
-One of lead researchers, said that 27 percent of the time, using data from the subjects’ Facebook profiles, they could correctly identify the first five digits of the subject’s Social Security numbers, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
-They also came up with a mobile phone app to recognize and then predict someone's sensitive personal data directly from their face in real time.
-In addition, the researchers took images of college students using a webcam and compared the photos to images from Facebook profiles. The researchers were able to re-identify about one third of the students

2)-By signing in to many of the Web's most popular sites, consumers send their names, e-mail addresses or other personal information to other websites and data-collection companies.
-The study found that on 185 heavily visited websites, a user name or user ID provided by consumers was shared with another website 61 percent of the time. In many cases, that data "leakage" would appear to violate websites' privacy policies, which typically promise not to share personal information with other parties.
-The study found that clicking on a local ad on the Home Depot website sent a user's first name and e-mail address to 13 data collection companies, while signing up for an account on Weather Underground sent the e-mail address to 22 companies.

Some other advantages of Internet is that you can get help with your homework. Learn new things, Watch videos of your interest, Listen to music. So internet has both advantages and disadvantages. I wrote all this but I don’t know what I would do without Internet.

2)
- there are reasons to draw a line between what science can and should do.
-When news came out of China eight years ago that scientists had created embryonic rabbit-people, the size of German newspaper headlines was as huge as the public outcry.
-Many saw the Chinese experiments as an attack on human dignity, while some people defended the Chinese saying that they were an important step on the road to finding new ways of treating illness.
-Animal welfare aspects aside, there is little to be said about such research. A few human cells in its body is not going to turn an animal into a human, not by a long shot. Countless human patients today have heart valves taken from pigs, and this in no way subtracts from their humanity.
-Some people thought experiments with apes will be necessary because, ethically, direct human experimentation cannot be justified. The experiments will not cause apes to have any new ideas, because there’s nothing human about their nerve cells

HW3

1)Like I said in HW2, I still want to write about how internet is affecting our lives.
-Lives before 1991(WWW was founded)
-Lives after 1991
-Advantages of Internet
-You can do everything online when you are sitting down in your bed.
     - Saves a lot of money
          - Reading newpapers online
          - Gas Money
          - Shop cheaper on websites like eBay, Amazon

-Disadvantages of Internet
      - How lazy it makes us
      - How unsocial it makes us
      - Increase in obese population.
2)
- The Ethics Commission is checking the Lime Rock Fire Chief Frank Sylvester's practice of paying vehicle taxes in Lincoln, where he works, instead of Pawtucket, where he lives.
- The car tax in Lincoln is quiet a bit lower than in Pawtucket, and he saves an estimated $2,300 a year with the out-of-town registration.
- He's been chief in Lime Rock in Lincoln for more than 20 years, and he worked more than 20 years in Pawtucket;s fire department before that.
- He makes around $140,000 a year.
-The city of Pawtucket picks up trash at Sylvester's house, and even though the owner has three registered cars, the city gets no car taxes from him to help pay for services because he lists the Lime Rock fire station in Lincoln, where he's chief, as his residence.

HW2

1) Emailed it
2) I want to discuss about how internet made us unsocial. Yes, the internet is a great thing. you can do everything online but no one can say it didnt make us lazy or unsocial. Average people use internet for 13 hours a week(http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10421016-93.html). That means in 50 years an average person is going to be on internet for 3.86 years. You can shop, take online class... People used to go out and shop by looking at the prices and buy the cheapest, but now people you can find the cheapest online with one click. Childhood obesity has tripled since 1970. We can stop this by being on the internet less and doing some stuff socially
3)
iOS developers make more money than Android app developers.
Android App Developers have been surveyed by  The Yankee Group(consultancy) and Skyhook wireless(suing Google for excluding its geolocation system from Android devices).
33& say the damage is more than 10,000 annually.
License Validation Library shows the developers if the app is acquired legit or not. It is provided by Google, but developers say it is easy to defeat.
Android App maker SmartDyne and David Keyes from KeyesLabel suggested that they need a license key policy based on accounts and/or device IDs, but the thing is this would make apps more expensive.Google didnt respond to this comment yet.
